Clarity determines the value of the diamond.
The term Clarity simply refers to the presence or absence of imperfections within or outside the diamond. Surface imperfections are called Blemishes and internal features are commonly called Flaws; and both these factors constitute the clarity traits. Perfections are rare and so too with diamonds. So Flawless Diamonds are extremely rare and therefore top of the line in value.
Deep or shallow line or scratches and nicks that constitute Blemishes are normally easy to dispense with during polishing. Internal inclusions are more permanent; some may even extend to the surface; others may be tiny mineral crystals trapped within the diamond as it forms under the earth’s surface. It is the location and size of the inclusion that will detract from the value of the diamond that houses it after cutting and polishing.
As with color, the system for grading clarity followed by GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and the AGS (American Gemological Society) is generally accepted in the industry.
The various clarity grade names and the corresponding values of 1.0 ct., F-color, 'Ideal'-cut round diamonds are given below:

The European Gemological Lab recognizes third level - SI3 which indicates inclusions that can be seen by the naked eye, but do not impact transparency and brilliance too much.
From the above, it becomes obvious that the more clear or without flaws that a diamond is, the better the price it will expect to fetch.
