What is Diamond Carat, Troy, Grain, Point

Diamond Carat describes diamond weight. With diamond carat the actual diamond weight is determined. In diamond world special denotations are used.

For example heavy diamond does not mean that the diamond is really heavy, it means that that particular diamond just falls into heavy diamond category that is defined as a heavy diamond category.

Instead of Carat the term Points is also used to determine diamond carat weight. Diamond Points are usually used to measure diamonds that are lower than 1 carat. So each carat has 100 points.

For example 3 carat diamond has 3000 diamond points. For example when Jewelers are using term 60-points diamond they are actually talking about 0.6 carat diamond. The biggest diamond they found till present time weighed 3.11 carats before they cut it. After cutting it weighed even less.

This measuring table will explain carat comparing to other measurements of weight.

  • 1 carat = 0.20 grams
  • 1 carat = 100 points
  • 1 carat = 4 grains Troy
  • 1 carat = 200 milligrams
  • 1 carat = 0.007 ounce
  • 1 carat = 0.25 grains
  • 1 Troy = 31,1 grams
  • 1 grain = 4 carats

Another term that was used in the history was grain which was simply equal to 1 wheat grain. 1 grain was

Some Jewelers are still using another diamond measurement term called Troy. Troy is a diamond measurement of weight named after the French city of Troyes, that was a popular trading destination in the Middle Age period. The troy measurement was mostly used for measuring the weight of precious metals, gems.

Another term of weight measurement that may be confusing is the term "Troy". The "Troy" is a measurement of weight that got its name from the French city of Troyes, which became an important trade city during the Middle Ages. The Troy unit of measurement was primarily used for precious metals, drugs and precious gems, such as diamonds. One Troy ounce is the equivalent of 31.1035 grams, or 480 grains.

The grain is the system of weight that was based on, simply enough, the wheat grain (or the barley grain in some ancient cultures). 1 grain equals to 0.25 diamond carats. 1 carat equals 4 grains.
