What are GIA, EGL and IGI Certificates The most respected diamond grading laboratory is GIA (Gemological Institute of America). GIA’s rules and techniques for diamond grading were the basis for all other gemological laboratories all over the world. GIA is the most respected gemological laboratory in the world.
Usually the GIA certificates are the most expensive but if you want to have the best diamond certificate, you should not mind paying a little more. It is worth it. GIA grading report is the most reliable of all diamond certificates.
It also shows the diamond flaws in special diamond diagram.
There are also other grading labs, the second most known certificates comes from EGL (European Gemological Laboratory ). There are also IGI (International Gemological Institute), AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories) , HRD ( A Belgium grading lab).
EGL and IGI are also very good diamond grading laboratories but they do not represent such an authorative as GIA. This is because EGL and IGI have less strict grading scales and training as EGL. For example EGL has more qdditional gradingscales that GIA does not recognize. For example EGL has a SI3 grade in its clarity scale, and GIA doesn’thave this grade. That is why the EGL SI3 is the same as GIA I1 and this is creating all the confusion.
And for example diamond that is graded by GIA as SI1 would get a higher grade in EGL, or IGI diamond laboratory. So be careful when checking the diamond certificates when buying diamonds. Diamonds from IGI or EGL have lower value as the same grade diamonds from GIA.
So be careful when buying diamond jewelry. There are not large discounts in diamond industry. If for example one diamond jeweler is selling the same grade diamond much cheaper than another jewelers, you might check who graded the diamond. You now know that EGL and IGI have inflated grading scale and that might be the cause of the price difference.
